Ridley Scott’s ‘The Last Duel’ Is Now On HBO Max

As temperatures drop and COVID-19 cases rise more than ever, why not stay inside and catch up on recent movies? A lot of 2021 theatrical releases like Ridley Scott's historical drama The Last Duel are finally available on streaming platforms at no extra cost. The film, starring Matt Damon, Jodie Comer, Ben Affleck and Adam Driver, has arrived on HBO Max just in time for the weekend movie night.

Based on Eric Jagger's 2004 book of the same name, The Last Duel tells the true story of a 14th-century trial of a battle between French knight Jean de Carrogues (Damon) and squire Jacques le Gris (driver), After which the allegation has been made. The Last Duel opened to largely positive reviews. John Cerba of Decider recommended the film to "Stream It", writing, "The Last Duel is highly watchable, with amusing performances by its male stars counterbalanced with spirited performances of comer. It's a tonal hodgepodge. but it's not enough to stop you from giving it a shot.

Although The Last Duel is technically a Disney movie (since the company owns 20th Century Fox), don't expect to see it on the streamer House of Mouse anytime soon. Instead, the film is available on HBO Max during a "pay 1 window", aka the time period in which premium cable channels have exclusive rights to play it. That's because Disney is bound to a 10-year deal between 20th Century Fox and HBO, which was signed in 2012.
