Timo Werner had one goal and two assists as Chelsea came twice from behind to beat Luton Town 3-2 in their FA Cup fifth-round match at Kenilworth Road on Wednesday night and advanced to the quarter-finals.
The result comes on an eventful day for Chelsea, with owner Roman Abramovich announcing before the match that he would sell the club he had bought in 2003. Chelsea have won the FA Cup five times under Abramovich.
News of Abramovich's decision, amid growing demand to be affected by sanctions following Russia's invasion of Ukraine, drew crowds ahead of kickoff.
Outspoken Chelsea fans were quickly silenced as Reece Burke put Luton Town to a 1-0 lead in the second minute, his brilliantly glowing header from a corner to beat Kepa Arrizabalaga at his away post.
Goalkeeper Jade Steer fell down while running a ball into the field and was replaced by Harvey Estead, the championship side suffered a concussion shortly after scoring.
A Luton Town turnover in midfield allowed Chelsea to equalize before the half-hour mark, when Werner closed the ball to Saul, who took the first shot to beat Istad 1–1.
It was Saul's first goal in 21 appearances since joining Thomas Tuchel's side on loan from Atletico Madrid last summer.
The hosts struck again with another top goal before half-time as Luton Town played from behind early and caught Harry Kornick behind the Chelsea defense for a clinical finish past to give his team the lead at the break. Tossed.
Werner pulled Chelsea level in the 68th minute with an overall finish, after disposing of a fully loaded ball at the top of the Luton Town defense from Ruben Loftus-Cheek.
The visitors took the lead for a good 10 minutes through Romelu Lukaku, who poked home from close after Werner swung the ball to his feet in front of a Luton Town goal. It was Lukaku's first goal for Chelsea of the 2022 calendar year.
Luton's squad is worth less than £20 million, while Chelsea have £1 billion and three Chelsea scorers alone were signed for a total of £160 million.
Lukaku was bought twice with Abramovich's money. He left for Everton in 2014 for £28 million and then came back for more than three times that figure.
Such are the eye-watering figures that Abramovich's announcement on Wednesday sent shock waves through English football.
Manager Tuchel, who just a year ago became the 11th full-time manager in the Abramovich era, said he knew the news long before the start.
"We've heard rumors all day and the TV is on in the hotel and people talk about it, so yeah that's big news," Tuchel said after the match.
Asked if it was the right decision, Tuchel said: "I think whatever decision he makes is the right decision. It's his choice, it's his club, and it's up to me to comment." Not there."
Despite all the distractions, the game itself was a classic cup tie with Luton, a club again after tough times, giving Chelsea a mighty scare.
