Colorado road conditions: Highways seeing major slowdowns as state gets hit with bands of snow

Metro area drivers should anticipate worsening roads throughout the day

Weather conditions on Colorado's roads are deteriorating Wednesday morning as another blast of arctic wind and snow rolls in.

The Colorado Department of Transportation warns drivers to be prepared for changing road conditions and to comply with traction and change laws.

"Another winter storm system affects Colorado Wednesday through Thursday," the CDOT wrote on its website. “Snow will move from north to south across the state beginning in the morning, reaching Interstate 70 and Denver mid-day. Snowfall will be seen in the south-west mountains and southern plains till Thursday.

Snow was affecting I-70 early on as the crew closed the west side of the road just before the Eisenhower Tunnel. After several spin-outs and a few hours of crash cleanup before the Continental Divide crossing, the road reopened before 9 a.m.

"Passengers should have enough tires for winter driving in the mountains," the CDOT said. "Business transportation should have enough chain for four drive tires."

There are no significant events in the Denver metro area, just slow spots while the morning commute takes place.

To the north, Interstate 25 between Colorado Highway 119 and Colorado Highway 52 heads south near Firestone, a lane closed due to a vehicle fire that occurred earlier.

I-25 was closed due to an earlier accident on the north side between Colorado Highway 68 and Prospect Road near Fort Collins. Fort Collins Police reported that they were assisting the Colorado State Patrol in a multi-vehicle collision. The road opened just before nine in the morning.

The FCPD said there had been another accident on I-25 just south of Mulberry. They suggest alternative routes.

A lane on southbound 104th Avenue is closed due to an accident at I-25 near downtown.

Aurora and Fort Collins are already on crash alert and more cities are expected to come soon.
