Yankees to choose Marwin Gonzalez

ESPN's Yankees Marvin Gonzalez informs utility worker Marley Rivera that he has made the opening day roster (Twitter link). New York would need to take a 40-member list in order to officially accommodate Gonzalez's selection.

The knockout would be his 11th season in the major leagues for González, who signed a minor league deal with New York during the off-season. He was a productive multi-site player during most of his tenure with the Astros, and his production has seen a decline in recent years. Other than the .303/.377/.530 appearing in 2017, González was never an elite hitter. He otherwise offered near-average offensive numbers between 2014–19, but has struggled since the start of the 2020 campaign.

Gonzalez has only gotten a .204/.279/.310 streak in 506 board appearances over the past two seasons. This is appropriate for the three different clubs in this section. He spent the 2020 campaign in season two of a two-year deal with the Twins. Gonzalez reunited with former Astros bench coach Alex Cora in Boston to begin the previous season, but the Red Sox hired him for the job in mid-August. He returned to Houston for the extended run, serving as a seat piece for Captain Dusty Baker while the Astros ran for another MLS banner.

The addition of 33-year-old Yankees coach Aaron Boone will find a versatile piece off the bench. There won't be a place in the starting lineup for Gonzalez most days, but he's been able to spell New York regulars across the field and anywhere in the corner.
