Rachel Zegler says she will be watching the ceremony in her sweatpants.
Rachel Ziegler, who played Maria in last year's "West Side Story" remake, says she wasn't invited to attend the Academy Awards on March 27.
The 20-year-old actor and singer said on her Instagram page that she wasn't invited to the ceremony because a fan commented on one of her recent photos, they couldn't wait to see what she would do on "Oscars night". What will I wear?"
"I'm not invited to so many sweatpants and my boyfriend's flannel," Ziegler replied in the comments.
After a few people shared her surprise and disappointment, she later wrote in the same comment thread, "I've been trying to do it all, but it's not happening." "I will root for the story of West Side from my couch and take pride in the work we did so tirelessly 3 years ago."
"I'm hoping some last-minute miracle happens and I can personally celebrate our film, but hey, sometimes it just happens, I guess," she continued. "Thanks for all the shock and outrage - I'm disappointed too. But that's okay. So proud of our film."
TODAY has reached out to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for comment. Disney, which owns the production company that distributes "West Side Story," did not respond to a request for comment.
"West Side Story," a Steven Spielberg-directed adaptation of the 1961 classic, was nominated for seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Supporting Actress for Ariana Debos, who played Anita in the remake.
Earlier this year, Ziegler won a Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy for her portrayal of Maria Vasquez in a musical drama.
Ziegler is set to play Snow White in Disney's upcoming live-action "Snow White" remake, and she mentioned she's currently filming that project in a series of recent tweets.
“My goodness, guys!! Appreciate all the support, I really do,” she wrote. “We live in such unprecedented times, and a lot of behind the scenes work goes into making the film magic. The same goes for filmmaking (like I'm so lucky I'm currently shooting in London)…”
"...and the awards look alike," she continued in another tweet. "Let's just respect the process and I'll turn off my phone x R."
Colombian-American Ziegler told TODAY last year that playing such a beloved Disney character is something she "doesn't take lightly."
"It's believed that little girls, little boys, little people can look at a screen and see someone who represents them in some way," she said. "I'm so excited to take that part and start working on it so that I can be the person I wanted (to look) like when I was younger."
