The Supreme Court on Friday appreciated the government's efforts in evacuation of Indians from Ukraine and said "we are concerned over people's anxiety'.
The Supreme Court on Friday refused to pass any order on a petition filed for the evacuation of Indians stranded in war-torn Ukraine. Chief Justice NV Ramana said the court would not pass any order by the government, saying "some work must be done". The CJI also said that he is not commenting on the efforts already being made. "We appreciate it. We are also concerned about the concern of the people," the CJI said.
“It is unfortunate that we did not learn from past mistakes and still resort to war. We don't have much, but there is concern about the students,” the CJI said.
Justice Ramana said, "You can have an online helpline or parents and families should know where they are. We will not pass orders. Please do some work." Attorney General KK Venugopal said that the Indian government is as concerned as the apex court.
Venugopal told the bench that a total of 17,000 stranded people, including Justices AS Bopanna and Hima Kohli, have already been evacuated from the conflict zone in Ukraine.
The Chief Justice's bench was hearing two petitions regarding the evacuation of students from Ukraine.
As the petitions were filed on Thursday, Justice Ramana asked what the Supreme Court of India could possibly do in the event of a war. "What will the court do? Can I instruct the President of Russia to stop the war?" CJI had said. On social media, I saw some videos saying what the CJI is doing! We sympathize with them," the CJI said.
