Edmonton Oilers lose 3-1 in Monday’s Battle of Alberta

Jacob Markstrom saved 27 goals as the Calgary Flames beat the Edmonton Oilers 3-1 on Monday night.

The Flames lead 14-1-1 in their last 16 matches.

The Oilers had two power plays in the first period, but the Flames had better chances.

Calgary forward Tyler Toffoli tries a break around Edmonton goaltender Mikko Koskinen, but his backhand hits the edge of the net. In the Oilers' next power play, Flames forward Elias Lindholm took a shot at two-on-one but hit outside the post.

The Flames took the lead in the second in six and a half minutes. Matthew Tkachuk worked the puck in front of Toffoli, who scored his 15th goal of the season. Toffoli will hit again in less than four minutes and make it 2-0 in flames.

The Oilers got a break of five minutes in the third. Puck bounces the referee to Edmonton forward Derek Ryan. His shot was blocked by Markstrom, but the Oilers' Devin Shore was there to bury the rebound.

Flames forward Jonny Goudreau took advantage of a turnover from Oilers defenseman Darnell Nurse to score 2:53 at the breakaway.

"We are clearly missing the guys," the Oilers gushed to Leon Dracitel after the game. "But every team goes through it, so it's not an excuse.

"I don't think it's ever a question of competition or battle level. We're playing with our hearts out. If you score a goal, you're not going to win too many games."

The Oilers were 0 for 4 while the Flames were 1 for 4 on the power play.

Oilers interim head coach Jay Woodcroft said, "I thought the 20 players we wore gave us everything they had." "It was a competitive game versus a good team.

Koskinen made 26 saves.

The Oilers (30-22-4) will make their five-match homestand debut against Washington on Wednesday.

"It's a game," Woodcroft said. "We're going to work to fix some things. In our team sport, we're going to work to get healthy... Our preparation and focus is now on the Washington Capitals."
