Spanish goalkeeper was close to missing out on Premier League clash after a positive test
David de Gea has been given the green light to play for Manchester United against Tottenham following a Covid-19 test issue, GOAL can confirm.
The Spaniard has started all United's Premier League games this season but is set to miss after returning a positive Covid test.
He has since tested negative and has been cleared to take his place between positions at kick-off.
What do we know?
As part of Premier League protocol, teams are required to take regular COVID tests and it is understood that De Gea initially showed positive.
Dean Henderson, who has only played three times this season, was expected to make a move against Spurs on Saturday evening and go out with De Gea.
However, it is understood that De Gea has tested negative and the club managed to resolve the 'testing problem' before kick-off so that the Spaniard can play.
Has anyone else had covid in Man Utd?
This is not the first time that United has been hit by a 'false positive'. The same thing happened during pre-season and they had to cancel a friendly arrangement against Preston North End.
Luke Shaw is set to miss the game against Tottenham as he still returns positive Covid results. But it is understood that this is not a common problem throughout the squad.
What's the news of the other team?
Ralph Rangnik said at his press conference on Friday that he hopes Cristiano Ronaldo and Edinson Cavani will be available for the crunch clash against Tottenham.
The game could prove crucial in the fight for the top four, with the Red Devils, who are currently fifth in the table, knowing they could risk dropping more points before the end of the 2021–22 campaign .
Centre-back Rafael Varane should also be available after missing the Manchester derby, but Scott McTominay is expected to miss out with a calf problem.
