20 coal cars derail in Md. altering Amtrak service between New York and DC

Amtrak is operating on a changed schedule between New York and DC on Saturday morning after 20 coal cars derailed from Norfolk Southern Freight in Harford County, Maryland.

The derailment of the Norfolk Southern train was shortly before 5:30 a.m. north of Baltimore near Aberdeen and stopped service for a few hours. While Norfolk Southern is a separate entity, according to a spokesperson for Norfolk Southern, it shares track with Amtrak.

According to Norfolk Southern, Amtraj Abd is working with federal authorities Norfolk Southern to repair the tracks to restore service. The material in the trains is not dangerous and no one was hurt.

The following service adjustments were made:

  • New York and Washington, D.C. limited acela service between
  • Limited Northeast Regional service between New York and Washington, DC, and heads south.
  • Palmetto Trains 89 and 90 (operating between New York and Savannah, Ga) are canceled
  • Carolinian Trains 79 and 80 (running between Charlotte and New York) will operate between Charlotte and Raleigh.
  • Crescent Train 20 (operating between New Orleans and New York) will run as normal
  • Silver Star Train 92 (operating between Miami and New York) will run as normal

Amtrak has not said when they expect service to return to normal.

The most current train status is on Amtrak's website and app. Riders can call 1-800-USA-RAIL if their journey has been affected; Change and cancellation fee will be waived.
