The Magpies could be back for Serie A star in the summer but West Ham tried to beat them to striker last month
Newcastle United could face a West Ham side, boosted by the arrival of one of the Magpies' primary January transfer goals.
Bergamo sources say Newcastle are in talks with Atalanta about a bumper deal worth £37m for Serie A hotshot Duvan Zapata.
But talks faded towards the end of the window as Newcastle turned their attention to Jesse Lingard and Hammer tried to take advantage of Zapata.
However, despite some paperwork between the London side and Atalanta, the Italian side reportedly "disappeared" and appeared to change its mind on the sale.
The 30-year-old is sure to return to talks in the summer window for both the clubs and the Colombia star, who has more than 100 Serie A goals to his name, will be considered a marquee signing for West Ham or Newcastle.
The Switzerland international is in good form with the Magpies as he nears the end of his contract at St James's Park.
After signing a new one-year extension last summer before moving to Euro 2020, Shar are in a similar position to this time last year.
There has been talk of a two-year offer for Shar, but the 30-year-old former Deportivo La Corua is getting several opportunities through his representatives including Napoli and AC Milan.
United's new assets will not only result in new players' agents trying to squeeze more out of the Saudi-backed owners, but existing squad members and Shar's German-based consultant Sports360 GmbH will also be out for a bumper payday .
Sports360 also looks after the big names like Toni Kroos at Real Madrid and Timo Werner of Chelsea, so used to high-level talks.
However, with Dan Byrne already signed in January and interest in Diego Carlos and Sven Boutman still exceeding Toon's ambitious board, the Magpies won't be pushed too far on unrealistic demands.

Newcastle are ruled by former West Ham youngster Gennario Margh.
The left-sided defender has been at West Ham and Cambridge, but Elliot Dickman and his staff have closely watched Maragh in under-23 games against Aston Villa and Huddersfield on a trial basis.
Maragh will be eager to follow in the footsteps of former Barking striker Isaac Westendorff, who won a contract after a successful trial period at the academy.
