Apart from the onset of winters, the winter solstice is also falling on Tuesday. This is the moment when the Sun is at its lowest daily maximum altitude in the sky, resulting in the shortest daylight hours and longest nights of the year north of the equator. The day when that moment comes is called Cold Sankranti or Himal Sankranti. It also astronomically marks the beginning of winter and the end of fall in the western part of the world.
According to the Norwegian site time and date, the 2021 winter solstice will be held at 3:59 UTC (9:29 am IST).
In many cultures around the world, the winter solstice is considered a special day and an important time of year. It is also considered as the beginning of the winter season in the Northern Hemisphere.
