Alexandria parade celebrates George Washington’s birthday, honors health care workers

Alexandria celebrates George Washington's birthday throughout the month of February, with the biggest celebration in Virginia City with a mile-long parade in Old Town on Monday afternoon.

The parade to celebrate Washington's 290th birthday begins at 1 p.m. In the Old Town on President's Day. The city government said some roads would be closed for the parade, including Queen's and Royal Streets as well as some other blocks between Franklin and Lee Streets.

According to the event's website, it is the oldest and largest celebration of Washington's birthday in the country.

This year's parade isn't just celebrating Washington, the city is also honoring local health care workers and first responders. He will be the Grand Marshal of the Nayak Parade.

Drum corps, color guards, bands, community organizations, youth groups, businesses and local government officials will march.

The parade's website said the birthday boy, Washington, and his wife Martha are expected to attend the free event.

The parade route begins near the intersection of Gibbon Street and Fairfax Street. It continues north for a few blocks before turning onto Queen Street.
