Joe Root is planning to prevent another Usman Khawaja masterclass as England prepare to call on injured stars Ben Stokes and Jonny Bairstow.
Australia are expected to retain Khawaja for the fifth Ashes Test, possibly ahead of opener Marcus Harris under pressure.
Khawaja cast doubt on his chances of playing in Hobart after becoming the third man to celebrate a twin century in the SCG Test.
But Root is sure the left-handed batsman will take part in the pink-ball Test starting Friday, admitting that he was surprised that Khawaja did not play the entire series.
The England captain said, 'He is a great player.
"It was a phenomenal effort. What he managed to achieve last week was really fantastic, so we need to make sure we keep him as calm as we can."
"We have some work to do."
After surviving 102 overs to save a draw in Sydney and take an embarrassing 5-0 defeat out of the equation, the Tourists are fresh off their best performance of the long summer.
But it came at a great cost.
Stokes (side strain), Bairstow (thumb) and Jos Buttler (finger fracture) all suffered injuries during the fourth Test.
Butler has already returned home.
Sydney Thunder's Sam Billings spent most of Wednesday's training session working on his keeping and is expected to make his Test debut at Bellerive.
Stokes and Bairstow are on the clock as they try to convince Root, coach Chris Silverwood and the medicos that they are ready to face Australia.
The pair are likely match-winners with the bat, while they faced a combined 228 deliveries to provide the most important bricks at England's SCG Stonewall.
Stokes went well in the team's first season in Hobart and is expected to play as a batsman.
Bairstow, who reached three points to register the only century of the series for England in Sydney, is off to a more questionable start after looking comfortable during some fielding drills on Wednesday.
"We just have to see where they are, see what their bodies can handle, and then assess from there," Root said.
"It's okay to be fit to play.
"But you have to be fit to perform and I think that's what we have to do.
"They need to make sure they feel like they are physically in a place where they can get through five days of tough cricket, no matter what Australia throws at them."
Root urged his teammates to build on the "Fight and Pride" featured at SCG and sign the tour on a high note.
