The incredible moment a man was pulled from a smoking light plane crash seconds before a train capsized was caught on camera.
The fire department said the plane crashed on or near train tracks near Whitman Airport at 2:09 pm.
Several LAPD officers can be seen in bodycam footage pulling the pilot out of the downed plane and pulling him back off the tracks - seconds before an oncoming train crashed through the rubble.
LAFD first responders medically evaluated the pilot, whose age and gender are not yet available, then he was taken to a regional trauma center. The nature and severity of any of the injuries he sustained is yet to be ascertained.
According to the Federal Aviation Administration, the aircraft was a single-engine Cessna 172. They confirmed that the pilot was the only person on board and that no one on the ground was injured.
The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board will investigate the accident, the FAA said in a statement. Future updates on the crash will be handled by NTSB.
There was no fire as the plane crashed, and a minor fuel leak was controlled by firefighters.
According to the LAFD, the damaged airplane was still in the area of the Metrolink Antelope Valley Line train track as of 2:30 p.m. Train movement was restricted in the area.
The LAFD stated that the lanes on San Fernando Road and Osbourne Street are "immediately closed in the area until emergency/investigation operations at the site are completed, period unknown".
