One suspect arrested, another man indicted in rapper Young Dolph's slaying in Memphis

Justin Johnson was apprehended Tuesday in Indiana, and Cornelius Smith, who has been in custody since Dec. 9, was indicted, officials said.

Two men accused of murdering rapper Young Dolph in Memphis, Tennessee in November are in custody, officials said Tuesday.

US The Marshall Service said 23-year-old Justin Johnson, who was named as a suspect last week, was arrested in Indiana on Tuesday afternoon.

Shelby County District Attorney General Amy Werich said in a statement that the second man, 32-year-old Cornelius Smith, who was already in custody, was charged Tuesday with first-degree murder.

Memphis police have said Young Dolph, 36, was at a bakery in his hometown of Memphis on November 17, when two men exited a Mercedes-Benz and opened fire.

Officials have not publicly suggested a motive.

The Marshall Service said last week that an arrest warrant had been issued for Johnson in connection with the murder. A reward of $15,000 was given.

It was not immediately clear whether Johnson had an attorney.

Marshall's statement on Tuesday did not say where Indiana Johnson was arrested. A press conference is to be held on Wednesday.

Werich said Smith was arrested on December 9 in Southaven on an auto theft warrant belonging to the Mercedes used in the murder.

He also faces charges of attempt to murder and other counts. Young Dolph's brother, who was with him at the time of the murder, was the victim of an attempted murder, Weirich said. Police said no one else was shot.

Online court records did not appear to show an attorney for Smith on Tuesday night. Werich said he was extradited to Shelby County and was being held without bail.

Young Dolph, named Adolph Robert Thornton Jr., was in Memphis for the annual Thanksgiving turkey giveaway when he was killed, his attorney said at the time.

Young Dolph, who began his career with a series of mixtapes in 2008, moved up the hip-hop ranks and Billboard charts with gold-certified hits like "100 Shots" in 2016. His 2020 album, "Rich Slave", peaked at number 4 on the Billboard 200.

Chance the Rapper and Gucci Mane were among the musicians who mourned and mourned his death. A public memorial was held at FedExForum, which is home to the Memphis Grizzlies and the University of Memphis Tigers men's basketball team.
