Joe Judge's future as New York Giants head coach remains uncertain a day after the Big Blue ended their 2021 campaign with a sixth straight loss for a 4-13 season.
The Giants have given no definitive indication that Judge will return for the 2022 campaign, NFL Network's Mike Garafolo reported Monday.
The judges met on Monday — a day in which Giants general manager Dave Gettleman retired — with ownership of the team and those meetings culminated with discussions to continue about the 40-year plan for the future, Garafolo reported. One of management's concerns is that Judge and the new GM have a similar approach to the franchise, so it's a multi-day process as the Giants' owners determine Judge's fate for next season, Garafolo said.
Garafolo also revealed that the judge met with the players and urged them to stay out of trouble and get in shape physically and mentally for next season.
The search for a replacement for Gettleman has already begun, including Titans vice president of player personnel Ryan Cowden, Titans director of player personnel Monty Osenfort, Bills assistant GM Joe Schon, 49ers assistant GM Adam Peters, 49ers director of player personnel Rann. Carthon and is the VP of the Cardinals. Support personnel Adrian Wilson prepared interview requests.
After New York's 4-13 appearances, the judges are 10-23 in two seasons with the club. He began his stint in 2020 with a five-game loss and ended the 2021 season on a six-game skid.
Since taking over the Giants, the judged's teams have averaged an NFL-worst 16.3 points per game. Jason Garrett was fired as offensive coordinator after Week 11 of the 2021 season, but the offense averaged 18.9 points per game to a dead-last 9.9. The defense has occasionally been a point of promise for Judge, who was previously a special team coordinator with the Patriots but is still just 17th overall since 2020.
Three head coaches were fired on Monday - Brian Flores with the Dolphins, Matt Nagy with the Bears and Mike Zimmer with the Vikings - and they each had better records in 2020 and 2021 than the judges.
Thus, the jury is still out on whether the judges will return for a third season at the helm of the Giants.
