Morgan in fight to keep captaincy: Vaughan

Former captain Michael Vaughan feels England will consider dumping Eoin Morgan as white-ball captain in Jos Buttler's side ahead of the Twenty20 World Cup in October until the current form is found.

Claiming a win percentage of over 60 per cent in 70 matches as T20 captain, Morgan has struggled for runs in the shortest format - reaching 25 just three times in his last 16 innings.

With England set to begin their five-match T20I tour of West Indies, Vaughan believes the 2019 ODI World Cup-winning leader must perform to justify his position ahead of the World Cup on Australian shores.

"They probably have five or six guys who can captain the team," Vaughan said.

"(Morgan) will be desperate, and I hope he gets to the T20 World Cup, but if he doesn't get form with the bat I wouldn't be surprised if Jos Buttler is captaining England in a few months."

At 31, Butler is four years junior to Morgan. While he endured a difficult Ashes series, the wicketkeeper-batsman has been in rich T20 touch, scoring 589 runs in 14 matches for England in 2021 at 65-plus.

Vaughan also admitted that pacer Jofra Archer will struggle to play for England in all three formats as he is recovering from an elbow injury.

Archer, who trained with the T20 side earlier this week but is yet to set a date for his return to the competition, has not played international cricket since March 2021.

"Obviously, he has a bad elbow. You don't have too many, three operations on one part of your body, unless there's a real problem there," Vaughan said.

"I think realistically, it's going to be difficult to play all three formats in a row with an injury like this. I hope they can manage it in a way that allows him to play some Test cricket but all No; obviously some white-ball cricket but not all."
