Collingwood's Irish defender Mark Keane has left the AFL to stay at home in Ireland after battling homesickness throughout his career.
Keane joined the Magpies in 2018 as a Category B rookie, making his 2020 debut and playing five AFL games.
The 21-year-old, who returned to Ireland in August last year, returned to Melbourne briefly in November for the pre-season but did not return for the resumption of training this week.
"Unfortunately, Mark has suffered homesickness throughout his time at Collingwood," said Collingwood's football boss Graham Wright.
"He went home in early August before the season was over and returned after training started in November.
"Mark did not return to training in the new year and we decided with Mark that the rigors of AFL football combined with being away from home were just too much for him at the moment."
Keane was signed as a Category B rookie until the end of 2022 and cannot be replaced in Collingwood's squad.
"Although a tough call, I know it is the right decision for me at the moment to stay in Ireland and be with my family," Keane said.
