Green shows maturity with key Ashes runs

It didn't end with a maiden ton, but Cameron Green's efforts to top the Ashes Green in Hobart have earned a lot of praise.

The 22-year-old scored his highest score of 74, 74 in Test cricket to help take Australia out of the troubled spot at 4-83 on the first day of the series finale against England.

He shared a 121-run stand with century-scorer Travis Head before being deep out on a short ball by Mark Wood at the start of Friday's final session in the Day-Night clash.

Green has proved a handful with the ball in this series, taking nine wickets at 15.44, and is now finding his groove with the Willows.

After being lean in the first three Tests, he has scored 74 runs in one innings after another.

During commentary on Fox Cricket, Mark Waugh said of the Blundstone Arena knock, "This is the best Cameron Green has seen in the series."

Green's runs, which included eight boundaries and several crunching drives, also drew praise from former England captain Michael Vaughan.

"His balance and alignment is fantastic. He is going to dominate a few Ashes series," Vaughan said.

Green averages over 50 at first-class level and has eight Sheffield Shield hundreds to his name, the number Test teammate Usman Khawaja believes should make his selection long-term.

The pair shared a crucial 179-run partnership on Day 4 of the SCG Test, which ended in a thrilling draw for the visitors.

"You don't often find a player like Cameron Green," Khawaja said last week.

"The selectors know this, and they see that you need to give this guy a little bit of chance and time and for him to develop.

"Invest in these players at a young age - something I think we probably haven't done as well in the past, changing and changing a lot - and you'll reap the rewards later down the track.

"You just need to invest. We saw with Steve Waugh, I think the same can be said of Cam Green."

Waugh reached double digits only twice in his first 11 Test innings, but scored 10,927 runs.
