Juventus lost their first Serie A match of 2022 on Sunday. Juve were undefeated in the league since their loss against Atalanta in November. Calhanoglu's penalty, meanwhile, gives Simone Inzaghi a very important victory after a difficult moment and could be a fresh start that could boost Inter to the end of the season. The Scudetto race is now an affair between AC Milan, Napoli and Inter Milan.

Juventus were better in the first half of the match, which was actually tense as expected. The first yellow card came a minute after kickoff after Lautaro Martínez accidentally kicked Manuel Locatelli in the face. Juventus midfielder Locatelli was forced to leave as he could not advance. Juventus had a better start and had some chances, especially through strikers Dusan Vlahovic and Paulo Dybala. Juventus' best chance of a quick move saw Giorgio Chellini's effort go to the post.
It looked like the first half would be goalless before a chaotic episode after the 45th minute. Alvaro Morata stepped on Denzel Dumfries and the referee accepted a penalty for Inter Milan. Calhanoglu's opening penalty was saved by Juventus goalkeeper Wojciech Szczny, but then the ball ended up in the back of the net on a rebound. However, the referee called for a foul on Juventus during the fight for a rebound, and then VAR got involved. The video assistant referee decided that the penalty should be retaken as Matthijs de Ligt was inside the box when Calhanoglu kicked the ball. It was a very unusual decision that Juventus fans will not forget in the coming weeks. Calhanoglu didn't miss his second chance.

The second half began as a first with Juventus trying to find an equalizer. Both Dybala and Dusan Vlahovic had chances that they could not score in the opening round of the second half. But Dennis Zakaria came closest to the draw in the 73rd minute. Zakaria hammered a shot at the post after a slight touch from Inter goalkeeper Samir Handanovic.
