Carlisle basketball high basketball in the NCAA championship game

The eighth-seeded North Carolina Tar Heels men's basketball team that ended the career of legendary Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski—and is vying for a national title against Kansas—names another big field on its bench.

"When you hear the name 'Labo', it's synonymous with high school basketball," said Scott Mattia, assistant athletic director for Pottsville Area High School and an area sports history.

Before Jeff Lebow became an assistant coach in North Carolina, also coaching his son, he and his father made a name for themselves at Carlisle High School in Cumberland County.

"His father Dave was a coaching legend at Pennsylvania State and won four state championships. The first was in 1985. Being a senior on that team with his son," Mattia recalled.

"Obviously, his father did a lot for Carlisle High School and the basketball program," said Carlisle High Principal Michael Black, who is also a friend of the Lebow family. "He mentored a ton of kids and worked with a ton of kids."

As Lebow Legacy Line Glass Trophy Cases at Carlisle High School, supporters of Jeff Lebow back home in Pennsylvania are hoping he'll add something even bigger to it during Monday night's game.

"It's always neat when you see big things like this, and you know what you're trying to do on a daily basis," Black said.

With a father and son from Carlisle taking home the first state title, now Lebow and his son are hoping for a title to the next level.

“What happened was legendary in the state of Pennsylvania, and it is unique that the father also coached his son when Jeff moved up the ranks of college,” Mattia said.

"Sharing that moment with my son," Black said, "I can't even imagine the emotion and excitement of the whole ordeal."
