When the Philadelphia 76ers engaged in a blockbuster trade with the Brooklyn Nets, they created a significant hole on the depth chart. Taking off James Harden and Paul Milsap, the Sixers had to drop Ben Simmons, Seth Curry and Andre Drummond.
Simmons suffered no major losses as he missed every game this season and is not planning to play for the Sixers again. While Curry was a prolific sharpshooter for Philadelphia, he would be replaced in Philadelphia's starting lineup by one of the game's best guards.
Meanwhile, Andre Drummond, who played backup for Joel Embiid throughout the season, traded with Brooklyn to a considerable loss for the Sixers.
While the Sixers were right to make that trade, it still put a question mark on the bench that could not be ignored.
Philadelphia gained some more depth in big man status by taking down Milsap, but it's unclear what the former All-Star still has left in the tank. And while the Sixers have two young talents in Charles Bassi and Paul Reid, it's hard to imagine that they could contribute to a winning basketball team right now.
So, the Sixers are currently offering a seasoned big guy a tryout right now. Last week, the Sixers signed Willie Coley-Stein to a ten-day deal. Colley-Stein, a former first-round pick in 2015, made his Sixers debut last Friday in Minnesota.
If it weren't for a blowout against the Timberwolves, it's not clear that Callie-Stein would have got any burn for the 76ers. However, the veteran appeared on the court for four minutes in the fourth quarter of last Friday's game.
When the Sixers returned to the floor a few days later, Collie-Stein rode Pine and didn't record a minute on the court. Nearly a week into his ten-day deal, Coley-Stein hasn't had many opportunities to show what he can bring to the table for Philadelphia.
But Sixers coach Doc Rivers said Tuesday that that was about to change.
According to Q Carlin of USA Today's Sixers Wire, Rivers said, "We honestly didn't do enough in practice to see anything, but we anticipate getting used to that quickly." "We'll just have to see what he can do for us. We need a rim protector, and he can do that. He can supply it."
The Sixers returned to court Wednesday night to face the New York Knicks once again. Although Coley-Stein didn't play in New York this past weekend, maybe he'll get a chance to do something when the Sixers host the Knicks in South Philly.
