One suspect has been arrested in connection with the case but details about the suspect were not immediately available
Officials in Florida said Friday night that they had made the arrest after several cadets of the US Military Academy in West Point, New York, ingested fentanyl-laced cocaine at a Florida rental home on Thursday.
Details about the arrest were not immediately available, but Wilton Manor, Florida, police and the Broward County Sheriff's Office said more details would eventually be made public.
The incident started around 5 pm. Stephen Golan, chief of the Fort Lauderdale Fire Battalion, said Thursday when first responders were called about multiple overdoses at a vacation rental home in Wilton Manors where West Point cadets were spending their spring break vacation.
"It is extremely dangerous for us," he told reporters. "There were several people in cardiac arrest in the front yard."
Officials later said that six male cadets were hospitalized for a suspected overdose: four cadets were taken to Broward General Medical Center and two cadets were taken to Holy Cross Hospital, they said.
In addition, a woman present at the scene was hospitalized, a statement from Wilton Manors police said.
Golan said Narcan, a drug used by first responders to reverse the symptoms of an overdose, was administered at the scene. Golan said that two of those who overdose became ill as he tried to give CPR to early overdose victims, according to Miami-based Fox affiliate WSVN-TV.
Some patients' heartbeats resumed after Narcan, but others were still holding their breath when they were taken to hospitals.
"These are healthy young adults, college students in the prime of their lives," Golan said. "Bringing this drug into their system, it is unknown what recovery will be on the critical person."
Miami's WTVJ-TV reported that all six patients were men in their 20s and were in town for spring break from the US Military Academy. Two were admitted to the hospital in serious condition.
The West Point Public Affairs Office told Fox: "The US Military Academy is aware of the situation involving the West Point Cadets, which occurred Thursday night in Wilton Manors, FL. The incident is being investigated and no further details are available at this time." Not there." News Digital.
