Antiques and goods worth ₹2.5 crore were recently stolen from the sets of Netflix's heist drama Lupine. This happened a day after the set of another Netflix show - The Crown - witnessed a robbery.
Money Heist is no longer just a show on Netflix. This appears to be the streaming giant's new reality. Netflix spokespersons recently confirmed that thieves have stolen more than half a million dollars (₹4 crore) worth of antiques, tools and props from the production of two of their most popular shows - The Crown and Lupine. Reports claimed that two sets were hit in separate incidents in the last week of February. Netflix has now confirmed the events.
Several reports claimed that the set of The Crown had broken into on 24 February. The Crown is based on the lives of members of the British Royal Family, specifically Queen Elizabeth II. It was reported that vehicles at the show based on the British royal family were vandalized and props used to decorate the sets were stolen. According to one report, "a replica Fabergé egg and gold and silver candelabra, and other props worth $200,000 (₹1.5 crore)" were stolen.
The Hollywood Reporter quoted a Netflix spokesperson as saying: "We can confirm that the antiques have been stolen and we hope they have been found and returned safely. With replacements being sourced, there is no hope that filming will be halted. ,
Similarly, AFP reported in February that the set of Paris-based Netflix's Lupine was sabotaged on February 25. As per the report, "On February 25, 20 burglars wearing their faces ransacked the set, set off fireworks and stole about $330,000. (₹2.5 crore) worth of equipment."
The Hollywood Reporter's statement to a Netflix spokesperson also confirmed the theft. “There was an incident on February 25 while shooting for the upcoming season of Lupine. Our cast and crew are safe and there were no casualties." Ironically, Lupine is a French-language heist drama that deals with large-scale robberies. In fact, Omar C, who plays master thief Asane Diop in the show. , was reportedly on the set when the robbers attacked.
The Crown is set to return with its fifth season in November this year, with Imelda Staunton taking over as Queen Elizabeth from Olivia Colman, who played in Seasons 3 and 4. Claire Foy was the series lead in its first two seasons. The third part of Lupine is also currently under construction, but there is no news of its streaming start.
