The Night At The Museum director has become a frequent collaborator of franchise star Ryan Reynolds
The love fest currently underway between Free Guy and The Adam Project director Sean Levy and star Ryan Reynolds has reached a new milestone today, as THR reports that Levi will be roped in to director on the upcoming, Marvel-produced Deadpool 3. As is tapped to move.
The Deadpool movies—which have been mothballed since 2018, due to the high-profile transfers of all of Fox's X-Men-adjacent projects to Disney—have always had a bit of a struggle finding directors. Most notably, Deadpool director Tim Miller (who managed to garner a huge hit with his directorial debut) left the second film, reportedly over creative differences with Reynolds. David Leach ended up handling that sequel.
However, the "constructive differences" between Reynolds and Levy do not appear to be a problem; Reynolds has starred in two of Levi's previous films, the video game-set Free Guy, and this week's new Netflix time travel film The Adam Project.
The big question on Deadpool 3 is how far Disney will be willing to go with it. Both films in the franchise were tough R-rated films, using a profane sense of humor that was well suited to The Merck with the Mouth, and a nod to the PG-13 tone of most major superhero fare. The latest was the opposite.
Levi's no, we can't help but point out, necessarily the guy you turn to when you crave a lot of humor and a barrage of bullets; He got into children's TV, before scoring major hits with the Night at the Museum franchise. Even his "adult" comedies, like Tina Fey and Steve Carell's Date Night, are on Tamer's side.
Of course, if there's one lesson that Deadpool's musical director The Game of Chairs illustrated, it's that Reynolds is the heart and soul of the character, and manager of the franchise's tone. He will also work with writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernicke, who worked on the first two films; Bob's Burgers and The Great North writers Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Laughlin both worked on the third installment of the franchise as well.
