Brighton 0-2 Liverpool: Player ratings as Diaz & Salah score in comfortable win

FROM AMEX - Liverpool again cut the gap to Premier League leaders Manchester City to three points as they strolled to a 2-0 win at Brighton courtesy of strikes from Luis Diaz and Mohamed Salah.

Brighton went close to a Neil Maupay drive from outside the box, but the Reds took the lead in the 19th minute when Diaz nodded in an excellent pass from Joel Matip.

The Colombian was wiped out by Seagulls goalkeeper Robert Sánchez, who seemed to be left with a red card as the ball went inside.

Siegel had a positive start but his threat was cleared after Liverpool's opener and it was the visitors who would get the closest before the end of the first half.

Salah was sent clear to the left and managed to push past Yves Bisouma, but his strike from a tight angle was reversed by Sanchez.

Brighton were immediately on goal at the start of the second half, with Maupay eventually setting up Leandro Trossard, who went on to embarrass himself when extremely well placed. Handball was suspected in the build-up, so it may have been ruled out in any case.

The Reds could have doubled their lead through Salah, but the Egyptian hit the bar with a deflected effort at first, when well placed, but made no mistake when referee Mike Dean handed the penalty.

Nabi Keita hit a shot at Yves Bisouma, who had an outstretched arm, allowing Salah to convert straight from the spot for his 20th league strike of the season.

The win means Liverpool are tight-lipped for Manchester City in the race for the Premier League title, while it is their fifth consecutive defeat in the division for Brighton.

Robert Sanchez (GK) - 5/10 - Extremely lucky to avoid a red card for a reckless challenge on Diaz. Weirdly escaped by the fact that the header went in. Make a few more stops.

Tariq Lamptey (RB) - 6/10 - Some miscommunication between Lamptey and Veltman left Diaz behind for the opener. The threat to attack was somewhat nullified by Diaz's consistent work in defense, but there were some good moments nonetheless.

Joel Veltman (CB) - 5/10 - Similarly, Lampty faults Diaz for a goal. The two functions central to the former Ajax defender don't seem like play.

Lewis Dunk (CB) - 5/10 - Some unconvincing moments against Liverpool's Rapid Front Three. Was still accurate with its delivery.

Mark Cucurella (LB) - 6/10 - Got some space on the Alexander-Arnold hit, but couldn't do much with it.

Steven Alzette (CM) - 4/10 - Have good memories of playing Liverpool, scoring a winner at Anfield last season, but no such luck here. Not impressive and brought in for Lallana.

Yves Bisouma (CM) - 5/10 - Cooped well several times but awkwardly lost his balance and gave the ball away several times. Penalty by raising hand and going towards the ball.

Alexis McAllister (AM) - 6/10 - Nice head flick sends Maupay on goal. Made two important passes.

Soli March (RW) - 5/10 - Didn't get more pleasure from his fight with Robertson, so tried his luck in the opposite direction. Similar story.

Neil Maupay (ST) - 6/10 - Quickly moved closer with a fierce drive. To no avail, Van Dijk dived to try to get a penalty. Sent to the goal at the start of the second half and eventually trumped Trossard, who should have scored.

Leandro Trossard (LW) - 5/10 - Quiet first half but should have buried a pass from Maupay. Had to hit the back of the net.

Adam Lallana (CM) - N/A - Came on at half time, sadly suffering an injury seven minutes after his introduction.

Pascal Gross (CM) - 6/10

Danny Welbeck (LW) - 6/10

Alison (GK) - 6/10 - seemed to handle the ball outside his box at one point, screaming from the home crowd. Saved well off Welbeck, only to be brought into action late.

Trent Alexander-Arnold (RB) - 7/10 - Got in excellent first half as usual, although the last ball was lacking.

Joel Matip (CB) - 8/10 - Excellent pass to pick Diaz to the assist. Brought the ball out well and took good position to tackle Brighton's cross.

Virgil van Dijk (CB) - 7/10 - actually lost to Mack Allister in an aerial duel that freed Maupe. In addition, Brighton's petty raiders brought him little grief.

Andy Robertson (LB) - 7/10 - Charged up and down the left in his own indomitable style and gave the march some joy.

Jordan Henderson (CM) - 6/10 - Nice change in midfield, if not particularly appealing. Power was lost with a shot as soon as the ball was taken to the edge of the box. Poor passing coupled with some good counter-attack opportunities.

Fabinho (CM) - 10/6 - Provided Liverpool with enough protection in central areas and ensured they were rarely in danger. Booked to bring down Maupe.

Nabi Keita (CM) - 7/10 - No exceptional moment, but did some good dirty work in mid-midfield. Won a penalty by hitting a shot on Bisouma.

Mohamed Salah (RW) - 7/10 - Missed his first chance well over the bar. Shot straight at Sanchez and hits Bisouma well. Hit the bar with a defiant effort and a seater missed shortly thereafter. Eventually got his goal - his 20th in the league this season - before being suppressed by chance.

Sadio Mane (ST) - 7/10 - Saved from Sanchez with Liverpool's first real chance. Some lovely twists and flicks, especially one where he scooped the ball over Veltman before firing a shot at Sanchez.

Luis Diaz (LW) - 8/10 - Started the scoring with a brave header, but took a blow to his troubles. Thank goodness was back early. The attackers proceeded to advance with Lamptey and come out on top more and more often. Perfect fit for this Liverpool team.

Thiago (CM) - 6/10

Diogo Jota (LW) - 6/10

James Milner (CM) - 6/10
