BMW recalling 917,000 U.S. vehicles over engine fire concerns

WASHINGTON, March 9 (Reuters) - BMW will recall 917,106 vehicles in the United States over potential engine fire risks, the German automaker said on Wednesday, the third such move on the issue since 2017.

The latest recall covers a number of vehicles manufactured between 2006 and 2013, including some 1 Series, 3 Series, X3, 5 Series, X5 and Z4 models because the heater for the positive crankcase ventilation valve (PCV) short-circuits and is extremely rare. cases may occur. The risk of fire may increase.

It replaces and expands BMW's previous recalls in 2017 and 2019 that included 740,000 and 184,000 US vehicles, respectively.

Many vehicles already repaired under the prior recall will be required to receive a new fix, which is currently being developed, BMW said, adding the measure and a substantial inventory of parts are expected by mid-2022.

BMW said that some of the previously recalled vehicles are not included in the new recall because they were produced with an improved PCV valve heater design.

The new recall was prompted by a series of fires at BMW vehicles that had previously been recalled that had been repaired. BMW said its investigation revealed supplier production issues could have caused damage to PCV valve heaters in the area.

The automaker said it was not aware of any accidents or injuries related to the latest recall.

It said that owners need not stop driving until the recall is fixed, but should stop driving if they notice smoke or the smell of smoke from the area near the engine compartment, or the smell of burning plastic. Needed.
