Joe Biden repeated a lie about the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act that Democrats have said so consistently since 2017 that you have to wonder whether Biden was lying or whether he actually believes his own malafide.
Biden's line: "Unlike the $2 trillion tax cut passed in the previous administration, which benefited the top 1% of Americans, the US rescue plan helped working people -- and left no one behind."
Biden's direct implication here is that the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act did not help working people. This is clearly, objectively and 100% false. Biden may have been lying, but it's also possible that he and all of his speechwriters were unaware of what it's like to be a working person.
The TCJA doubled the standard deduction and doubled the child tax credit, thus zeroing federal income taxes for thousands of low-income and middle-class people.
The lowest income earners in the United States saw a 100% tax deduction from the bill. It literally means "to help people who work." As the Tax Foundation showed, every quintal saw significant tax cuts. Therefore, Biden was wrong on his central claim, and the data on his being wrong was available and known for a long time.
Biden's indirect implication was that the TCJA only helped 1%. Yes, the big tax cuts got the rich people big tax cuts, but it actually transferred a large part of the tax burden to the rich. As the Tax Foundation explained, a lot of wealthy people received a tax increase: "The expansion of the standard deduction, the abolition of the taxpayer exemption, and a tendency to lower itemized deduction limits such as the $10,000 limit on state and local taxes (SALT). The average federal tax rate paid by the bottom 60 percent of households, but the average tax rate for the top 40 percent of earners increased."
Biden has been criticized for falsely attacking the TCJA. Let's see if it is fact-checking.
