After delays, Berkman II finally turned into a pile of rubble

Abandoned building demolished Sunday

The building known as Jacksonville's most infamous city finally collapsed on Sunday.

The blast happened immediately at 10 a.m. and was welcomed by hundreds of onlookers across the city.

The Berkman Plaza II building has been an abandoned structure on East Bay Street for many years.

Sunday's $1.2 million demolition came after years of back and forth. Jacksonville officials said the process has been frustrating with all the delays.

The eruption had already been delayed once this year. The date of 8 January was described as "very optimistic".

The partially completed building has been sitting since construction ceased in 2007.

Last year, permission was given to demolish the building from top to bottom. But then contractors found problems with the structure and required an emergency stop for all demolition activities.

Now, a developer wants to replace the Berkman II with the city's tallest skyscraper.

Bay Street was closed at 7 a.m. and reopened later in the afternoon after clearing any potential debris from the road.
