It's been said that good things come to those who wait — and "Stranger Things" fans certainly know a thing or two about waiting.
But two years after the Season 3 premiere, Matt and Ross Duffer, the creators of the hit Netflix show, AKA the Duffer Brothers, announced in a letter to fans on Thursday that the fourth season would be dropping this spring — and it would also be "the end." Beginning of" the beloved series.
Running nearly twice the length of the previous season, Season 4 will be released in two versions, the brothers said, with the first arriving on May 27 and the second on July 1.
"So this is good news. It's coming soon. And it's bigger than ever," he wrote.
But the new season will also be the second to last of the show.
"Seven years ago, we planned the full story arc for 'Stranger Things'," he wrote. "It proved too big to tell in four (seasons) — but, as you'll soon see for yourself — we're now moving towards our finale. Season 4 will be the final season; Season 5 will be the last."
But don't worry, "Stranger Things" fans. The Duffer Brothers assured that there are "still many exciting stories" to come, including new mysteries, adventures and characters.
According to a plot synopsis provided by Netflix, Season 4 begins six months after Season 3.
"Struggling with the consequences, our group of friends is isolated for the first time - and navigating the complexities of high school doesn't make things any easier," the summary reads. "At this most vulnerable time, a new and terrifying supernatural threat emerges, posing a gruesome mystery that, if solved, could finally put an end to the horrors of the Upside Down."
It's been two years since Netflix released the first teaser trailer for Season 4. The 50-second clip zoomed in on a snowy work camp with barking dogs and armed guards. one of the workers? Chief Jim Hooper, played by David Harbour, whose fate was left a mystery at the end of Season 3.
The Duffers said of Hopper at the time, "He is imprisoned far from home in the icy wastelands of Kamchatka, where he will face both human and other dangers." "Meanwhile, back in the States, a new terror is beginning to emerge, something long buried, something that connects everything."
The third installment of the sci-fi series, released in July 2019, was the second most popular title on Netflix for 2019, the streaming service said.
