Michigan head coach Juwan Howard throws punch at end of college basketball game

Michigan men's basketball head coach Juwan Howard throws a punch during a postgame handshake after his team's game against Wisconsin on Sunday.

After the Michigan Wolverines' 77–63 loss to the Wisconsin Badgers, Howard and Wisconsin head coach Greg Gard shook hands, and Howard could be seen saying something to the guards.

The guard grabbed Howard with his left hand to prevent the Michigan coach from passing to the next person to shake hands, which angered Howard.

After arguing for a few moments, the two parted ways before another Wisconsin assistant shouted at Howard.

Shortly after, Howard threw a punch at a member of the Badgers coaching team, causing a scuffle between both sets of players and staff.

Guard spoke with CBS Sports Postgame on Court to explain his view of the dispute.

"Obviously they didn't like that I called the timeout to reset the 10-second call because we only had four seconds to get the ball on the halfcourt," the guard said. "And I didn't want to have my backup, I had all my bench guys in the game, I didn't want to put them in a position of scrambling with only four seconds.

"So I took a timeout and I gave us a new 10 seconds and helped him settle down and get the ball in. He didn't like it when the handshake came through the line, so I'll leave it at that and tape Will show the rest."

Howard addressed the incident at a postgame press conference: "I didn't like the timeout he called, I'll be completely honest, I just felt it wasn't necessary at the time, especially when it was a big lead. .. I thought that was not fair to our people.

"Originally, I addressed with the head coach that I would miss out on the timing of the ending. For someone to touch me, I think it was very inappropriate for him to touch me because we were each other. Were communicating with him orally. So that's what ended up happening, it escalated it."

University of Michigan athletic director Varde Manuel issued a statement after the end of the game.

"I know and watch our men's basketball game," Manuel said. “There is no excuse for any of our employees or student-athletes to have physical altercations with others, regardless of aggravating factors.

“I contacted Chris McIntosh and apologized and [Michigan] President (Mary Sue) Coleman reached out to UW Chancellor Blank to apologize for the completely unacceptable behavior. We will review the situation more thoroughly and Big Ten will work with the conference as they determine their disciplinary actions and determine whether further disciplinary action is required."

The Big Ten Conference said it is "aware" of the incident and that it is "currently assessing the incident."

"The conference will provide more information and take prompt and appropriate disciplinary action upon completion of its review," it said in a statement.

CNN has reached out to the University of Wisconsin for a statement.
