Guatemala earthquake: Buildings reduced to rubble as massive 6-magnitude tremor hits

The European Mediterranean Seismological Centre said the 6.2 earthquake struck on Wednesday morning in Guatemala, at a depth of 96km, around 40km southwest of Mazatenango

A massive 6.2 magnitude earthquake struck Guatemala, leaving buildings buried in rubble.

The European Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC) said the quake hit the Central American country on Wednesday morning, with its epicenter in Nueva Concepción.

The EMSC said it was at a depth of 96 km (60 mi).

According to reports, the initial tremors were felt at 1.12 am local time, before which two tremors came at 1.50 pm and 1.56 am, measuring 5 and 4.8.

This morning a car was crushed by debris falling from a collapsing building in the city of Totonikapan.

While other photos show rocks falling across a road and emergency workers digging in the rubble.

Other countries to feel the force were El Salvador and Mexico.

According to INSIVUMEH, this comes after the so-called earthquake struck the nation of Guatemala on Sunday, in which 15 aftershocks were felt in 24 hours.

Their intensity ranged from 3.2 to 5 on the Richter scale.

The National Coordinator for Disaster Reduction later confirmed there were no casualties or infrastructure damage.

The swarm hit the banks of the Retalhuleu.

Prior to this, 15 small earthquakes occurred last week in the Pacific Ocean and the coasts of Mexico, El Salvador and Santa Rosa.

Guatemala is exposed to natural phenomena of this type because of its location at the convergence of the Caribbean, Cocos and North American tectonic plates, as well as local geological faults.
