Former RCB Skipper Virat Kohli Recalls How Test Specialist India Opener Turned Into 'T20 Beast'

The cricketer since 2016, has scored runs in excess of 500 with his lowest being 593 in 2019. He won the Orange Cap in 2020 where he amassed 670 runs.

KL Rahul made his IPL debut in 2013. At that time he was known as Test specialist. But times changed and KL Rahul also transformed himself into a 'T20 beast'. When asked about the two best prospects under his captaincy at RCB, Kohli described Rahul. His name was also Yuzvendra Chahal. The latter made his IPL debut for Mumbai Indians in 2011, but it was in Bengaluru that he really came into his own. Similarly, KL Rahul came into his own in the 2016 IPL as RCB reached the final. Rahul scored 397 runs in 14 matches at an average of 44.11 and played a brilliant innings of 146.69.

“The only two people who come to mind for me are KL (Rahul) and Yuzi (Yuzvendra Chahal). KL Rahul was with RCB in 2013 along with Karun and Mayank. KL Rahul was never a player who was seen as a T20 specialist. He was part of Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2015 and Avinash Vaidya was our manager earlier. He approached me because he was in touch with KL Rahul, and he was not getting any playing time. And I saw him play for India," Kohli said on 'RCB Podcast'. Meanwhile, KL Rahul, after making his debut for RCB in 2013, moved to Sunrisers Hyderabad, where he was not getting any playing time. This was brought to the notice of the then RCB captain Kohli.

“He was playing for Sunrisers and he was not getting many chances and the chances he got, I felt like he is playing under pressure, you can see he was trying to prove a point, himself in IPL. was trying to prove it. When the opportunity came, I thought, this guy has incredible talent and maybe playing for Bangalore and RCB will make things easier for him because there, he is playing in front of his home audience and here AB, Chris and I are here and there. If KL can play a part, maybe he can grow in confidence. ,

"He doesn't have to be the focal point or that youngster who has to prove himself. It's about being part of this great team and showing what he can do. And the way he batted that season." That, for me, was a big change to see a player who was suddenly going to be this beast in six months. From there he moves on," he said.

KL Rahul has scored more than 500 runs since 2016 with his lowest in 2019 being 593. He won the Orange Cap in 2020 where he scored 670 runs.
