Agent David Cantor announced Wednesday that the Los Angeles Rams are signing veteran safety Eric Weddle for the postseason run.
Wedel retired after the 2019 season after a year at LA after not playing in two seasons, his return at this level is a surprise development for the No. 4 seed Rams, who will host the Cardinals in a wild-card game on Monday . ,
LA security is slim in Week 18 after losing Jordan Fuller to an end-of-season ankle injury and Taylor Rapp to concussion protocol. Injuries set the stage for Waddell's return.
A two-time All-Pro and a six-time Pro Bowl selection, Weddle played in 13 NFL seasons with the Chargers, Ravens, and Rams. He made 29 interceptions, five defensive touchdowns, eight forced fumbles and 1,179 tackles before retiring in 2020.
Wedel started all 16 games with the Rams in his final season.
How much the 37-year-old is in the tank after retiring for two seasons remains to be seen. But Waddell would get another shot at a Super Bowl ring chase that had escaped him during his career, and the Rams add a familiar veteran who could help fill an injury-ridden safety squad.
