Joe Judge on Tuesday became the fifth NFL coach to be fired by the New York Giants after being relieved of his duties.
The decision to sack Judge came just a day after the team announced the retirement of senior vice president and general manager Dave Gettleman.
"[Giants president and co-owner] Steve (Tisch) and I both believe it is in the best interest of our franchise to move in the other direction," said team president John Mara.
"We met with Joe yesterday afternoon to discuss the status of the team. I met with Joe again this afternoon, and during that conversation I told Joe about my decision. We appreciate Joe's efforts on behalf of the organization." praise them.
"I said before the season started that I wanted to feel good about the direction we played when we played our last match of the season. Unfortunately, I can't make that statement, which is why we made this decision. .
"We will hire a general manager and that person will lead the effort to hire a new head coach."
Judge spent two years as the head coach of the Giants, setting a 10-23 record during that time.
Despite looking relatively secure in the middle of the season, the judge's grip on the job increasingly weakens as 2021 spirals. After a season-ending injury to starting quarterback Daniel Jones, the Giants finished the season on a six-game losing streak, which featured some significant struggles in Jones' absence. The team finished with a 4–13 record, tying the worst franchise for a loss in a season.
He is the third consecutive Giants coach to not make it to the third season, like Ben McAdoo and Pat Shurmur.
Judge became the fifth NFL coach to be fired after being relieved of his duties on Monday.
Brian Flores was fired by the Miami Dolphins, Matt Nagy by the Chicago Bears and Mike Zimmer by the Minnesota Vikings.
On Sunday, the Denver Broncos parted ways with head coach Vic Fangio.
