Lutkins joins star AFLW knee casualties

Kate Lutkins has endured a dreadful opening weekend of injuries for the AFLW with confirmation that she also suffered a season-ending knee injury.

Brisbane's leading defender, best in her maiden Grand Final win, joins fellow stars Isabel Huntington and Brie Davy over high-profile anterior cruciate ligament ruptures from weekend matches.

All out for the rest of the season, Lutkins broke his right ACL.

Knee reconstruction has been a major issue in the AFLW throughout its five-year history.

The latest injury report showed that ACL injuries last year were among the lowest in the league.

But the loss of three top players at the start of the new season with a dangerous ACL rupture is a significant blow to the league.

"This is obviously difficult news for Kate and the club, and we will rally around her to offer her the full support she needs during her recovery," Lions women's football boss Brenna Brock said.

"Kate has got a great support network of family and friends, and she is already looking forward to the challenges that rehabilitation will bring."

It was a costly loss for Adelaide, with the Lions also confirming on Tuesday that Keys forward Dakota Davidson will miss four to five weeks with a leg sprain.

GWS player Chloe Dalton suffered a shoulder injury over the weekend.

And in further bad news for the Bulldogs, captain Ellie Blackburn will apparently miss next weekend's game against Geelong as part of the league's health and safety protocols.

The Bulldogs confirmed Huntington's injury on Monday, and Collingwood did the same to Davey.

Huntington had rebuilding on both knees in 2018 and 2019, and his right knee was bent on Saturday as he changed direction in the Bulldogs' defeat in Melbourne.

The scans confirmed that Huntington had ruptured his right ACL graft, while his lateral meniscus was also damaged.

Collingwood confirmed that Davey has ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee, as well as his medial collateral ligament.

Sunday's win over the 26-year-old took the injury late in his fourth term.

Davey will undergo a second reconstruction on her right knee after having surgery in 2018, and she will miss the rest of the season.
