Glory sign Matildas forward Leena Khamis

Perth Glory have signed Matilda forward Lena Khamis on a short-term contract as the A-League women's club grapples with injuries and a COVID-19 headache.

Khamis has made over 120 ALW appearances during spells with Sydney FC, Canberra United and most recently Western Sydney Wanderers, where he scored two goals in ten matches last season.

His domestic honors include two Premiership and one Championship titles, as well as a Golden Boot award in 2009.

Internationally, the 35-year-old has 25 Matilda caps to her name and was part of the team that won the Asian Cup in 2010.

Recent injuries to Saira Hintzen, Susan Fonsongkham and Demi Koulizakis have exhausted Glory's attacking options.

The club is also battling a COVID-19 outbreak which it is trying to contain.

Khamis jumped at the chance to join Glory on a short-term injury contract when she was approached by coach Alex Apakis.

"I still had the drive and passion to try and play the 2022 season, but unfortunately was not given the opportunity," she said.

"Alex got in touch with me and we had a really good conversation about the team and how I could help.

"I think these women are a special group.

"He has a really good chance of reaching the final this season and I look forward to getting it with him.

"Our goal is to play semifinal football because based on history, anything can happen once you get there."

Sixth-placed Glory has played five games this season for two wins, two losses and one draw.

Khamis will be included in Glory's squad for Sunday's match, which will take on fifth-placed Newcastle Jets at No. 2 Sports Ground.
