Former Turkey cap Calik dies in car crash

Former Galatasaray and Turkish defender Ahmet Kalik has died in a car accident at the age of 27, his club Konyaspor has confirmed.

"We are deeply saddened to lose our player, Ahmet Kalik, who earned the love of our fans and the city from the very first day he arrived in Konyaspor," the club posted on Twitter on Tuesday.

According to Turkish website Spor Arena, the accident happened on a motorway near the capital, Ankara, where Kalik was on his way for a day off to finalize his wedding plans.

Kalik made over 50 appearances for Galatasaray during a three-year hiatus before joining Konyaspor in 2020. He has previously played for the Genklerberliga.

The centre-back played eight times for the Turkey national team between 2015 and 2017 and was part of the Euro 2016 squad, although he did not play a match.

The Turkish FA said: "It is with great sadness that we learn that Ittifaq Holding Konyaspor football player Ahmet Kalik, who also played for our national team, has passed away as a result of a traffic accident.

"May Allah have mercy on the dead."
