Quarterback Dillon Gabriel announced Monday that he is relocating to Oklahoma, only 18 days after announcing his intention to transfer to UCLA.
Gabriel entered the transfer portal on 27 November, leaving UCF after three years with the program. Two weeks after entering the relocation portal, Gabriel publicly intended to transfer to UCLA.
Transfers don't sign any paperwork that links them to the school they choose, and because Gabriel hasn't enrolled at UCLA, he's able to change his decision. Because of this, he is now going to Oklahoma.
UCLA still has Dorian Thompson-Robinson on the roster, the starter from this past season, along with Ethan Garbers, Chase Griffin and Parker McQuarrie.
Gabriel started in 12 games as a freshman for UCF in 2019, then he started all 10 games in 2020, scoring 3,570 yards, 32 touchdowns and four interceptions.
A fractured left clavicle caused him to miss nine games this past season against Louisville on September 17. In three competitions, Gabriel threw 814 yards, nine touchdowns and three interceptions.
His decision to transfer to Oklahoma came on the same day that Sooners freshman quarterback Caleb Williams entered the transfer portal. Williams said he plans to explore all his options and one of them includes returning to Oklahoma.
New Sooners coach Brent Venables had already seen Spencer Rattler walk out, and now he could see Williams on the way.
Gabriel adds a proven talent to the Oklahoma roster and reunites Gabriel with new offensive coordinator Jeff Laby.
Leby was the quarterback coach and then offensive coordinator at UCF from 2018 to 2019, so the two are already familiar.
Venables has now added Gabriel and ESPN 300 quarterback Nick Evers, the overall number 134 recruit in the 2022 class, as its coaches since joining the OU program.
