Athletic Bilbao 0-2 Real Madrid: Benzema and Modric scoop Supercopa glory

Real Madrid secured the first trophy of Carlo Ancelotti's second spell as head coach by securing a 2–0 win over Athletic Bilbao in the Supercopa de Espaa final.

Luka Modric and Karim Benzema scored as LaLiga leaders proved too strong for Athletic, who beat Atletico Madrid in the semi-finals on Thursday.

Benzema's goal was a penalty in the second half and took him to 18 career goals against Athletic. They are the team against whom he has scored the most goals, and he was a threat during this one-sided game.

Even when Athletic were awarded a late spot-kick, sent by Eder Militao to handle Ral García's header, they could not take advantage. Garcia punched hard on a penalty, but Thibaut Courtois saved it with his feet.

Ancelotti was a Champions League winner during his first stint with Madrid, and the veteran Italian will hope that success at Riyadh will prove to be the first of many trophies for a second time.

Madrid had a string of early half chances, including Benzema, Toni Kroos and Modric, who could not capitalize.

Casemiro then threatened twice in quick succession, forcing Unai Simon to wide an ambitious long-range strike for a corner, before a looping header from the midfielder was touched on the bar by the goalkeeper.

Modric scored the goal in the 38th minute. Rodrigo dribbled into the athletic penalty area from the right flank before intelligently bowling the ball to his veteran teammate, and from 17 yards the Croatian made a beautiful shot in the right corner.

Madrid were awarded a penalty in the 51st minute after a VAR check when Benzema's shot hit Yere Alvarez's hand. Benzema powered a spot-kick into the left corner and Madrid looked home and hodged, facing barely any pressure from Athletic, who won the event last year.

An 89th-minute penalty could have ended a nervous finish, but Courtois came to Madrid's rescue.
