6.6 Magnitude Earthquake Rattles Cyprus, Felt in Israel

The country's Geological Survey said on Tuesday that a 6.6-magnitude earthquake struck off the west coast of Cyprus and was felt by some.

The quake, which originated in the eastern Mediterranean region, was also felt by some in Egypt, the country's National Research Institute for Astronomy and Geophysics confirmed. Several people also felt the quake along neighboring Turkey's Mediterranean coast, but there were no reports of casualties or damage.

The Geological Survey said the quake struck 369 kilometers (229.2 mi) northwest of Naharia at 5:10 a.m. (local time).

Israelis felt the tremors across the country, including Nahariya, Tel Aviv, Bayer Sheva, Jerusalem, Haifa, Petach Tikva and Rechovot.

According to The European Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC), the quake was recorded between 6.5 and 51 km (31.6 mi) deep.

Israel Police confirmed that it had received reports about earthquakes across the country. “The earthquake happened in Cyprus and was felt in different parts of the country. Dozens of calls were recorded by police telephone services and there is no tsunami warning."

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported that the quake had a magnitude of 6.6, and it was about 48 kilometers from the city of Police in the northern part of the country.
