Prime Minister Narendra Modi will chair a meeting on Thursday to review the current COVID-19 situation in the country as cases of its new variant omicron continue to rise.

India has so far reported over 200 cases of the Omron variant, with the national capital leading the way. Till Wednesday, 57 cases have been reported in the city. It is followed by Maharashtra (54), Telangana (24), Karnataka (19), Rajasthan (18), Kerala (15) and Gujarat (14). Three omicron cases have been reported in Jammu and Kashmir, while Odisha, Andhra Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh have two cases each.

Meanwhile, the total Covid-19 tally in the country stands at 34,758,481 which includes 478,325 deaths. The country's active caseload currently stands at 78,190, the lowest in 575 days.

While some states are seeing a surge in cases, the nationwide daily tally is hovering below the 8,000 mark.

On Tuesday, the Union Health Ministry alerted the states and union territories about the latest mutation of COVID-19 - Omicron. Described as a 'worry type' by the World Health Organization (WHO), it is three times more transmissible than the delta version, according to scientific research conducted so far.

In the advisory, the Center also asked states and union territories to examine trends in the spread of COVID-19 infections and consider measures such as night lockdown. The Center also suggested banning large gatherings if more than 10% of all tests turn positive in a week or if the capacity of hospital beds breaches 40% of the capacity.

The ministry further said that there is a need for greater foresight, data analysis, dynamic decision making and strict and prompt control action at the local and district level.
