Goa Liberation Day is celebrated every year on 19 December in the memory of the Indian Armed Forces who liberated Goa from Portuguese colonial rule. Although India gained independence from British rule in 1947, it would take another 14 years for Goa – then a Portuguese colony – to be free from foreign control. Finally, on December 19, 1961, Indian armed personnel managed to take control of Goa from the Portuguese, ending nearly 450 years of colonial rule.
Every year on 19th December, various events are organized across Goa to mark the Liberation Day celebrations. This year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is visiting the coastal city to celebrate the completion of six decades of its independence.
Prime Minister Modi will felicitate the freedom fighters and veterans of 'Operation Vijay', the mission carried out by the Indian Armed Forces that liberated Goa from Portuguese rule. Modi will also inaugurate several development projects - including the renovated Fort Aguada Prison Museum, Super Specialty Block at Goa Medical College, New South Goa District Hospital, Aviation Skill Development Center at Mopa Airport and a gas-insulated substation at Dabolim-Navelim, Margao.
