Barcelona have made Alvaro Morata their top target for January after Ferran Torres was signed for €55 million, sources have confirmed to ESPN.
Morata, 29, is on loan from Atletico Madrid to Juventus, but sources have told ESPN that he is prepared to cut short his stay in Italy with an emphasis on the signing of Barcelona head coach Xavi Hernandez.
Barca have held preliminary discussions with all parties involved in the loan deal over the summer with the option of making the move permanent.
However, the Catalan club's financial situation is complicating any possible deal as they are restricted by LaLiga's €97 million spending limit.
As long as they are not within that range - which won't happen this season - they are only allowed to spend 25% of what they charge in transfer fees or save on pay cuts.
After completing the signing of Torres from Manchester City earlier this week, Barca still need to lighten their squad before being able to register him and any other new signings.
Yusuf Demir and Luc de Jong's loans are to be cut, while the club will remain open to offers from Philippe Coutinho and Samuel Umtiti. Sources told ESPN Barcelona will also hear interest for United States international Sergio Dest.
Sources say Barca are also exploring other ways to allow LaLiga to spend and allow them to register Torres.
Xavi has prioritized consolidating the attack since taking over. Barca scored only two goals in six Champions League appearances as they crashed out of the competition in the group stage and were scouring the market for low-cost alternatives.
Edinson Cavani was a target, but Manchester United's reluctance to give Uruguay an international leave led him to move to Morata, who is a fan of Xavi.
Barcelona have previously tried to sign the former Real Madrid striker. Blaugrana made an unsuccessful move for Luis Suarez in 2019 when he was injured.
The Spain international is in his second spell at Juve, having also spent time in England with Chelsea. His loan at Juventus runs through the summer, while his contract at Atletico expires in 2023.
He has scored seven goals in 23 appearances in all competitions for Juve this season after finishing the previous campaign with 20 goals in 44 matches.
