On the 27th anniversary of the death of Selena Quintanilla-Pérez, fans of the Latin music icon have learned that a new album is in the works.
The widely popular pop star, known worldwide as Selena, was born in Corpus Christi, Texas. There on March 31, 1995, he was shot dead by the president of his fan club.
Known as the Queen of Tejano Music, Selena had a huge cultural influence in Tex-Mex culture and has won the U.S. expanded the audience for Latin music.
She began singing at the age of about 10 with her Mexican-American family band Selena y Los Dinos. As a teenager, she began recording hit songs and winning awards, as well as showcasing her duel and attracting Mexicans and Americans.
After breaking into the male-dominated field of Tejano music, he released his album "Live!" in 1994. Won the Grammy Award for Best Mexican-American Album with and was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2021 Grammys.
His album "Dreaming of You", which came out less than four months after his death, was the Latin artist's debut album to debut at #1 on the Billboard 200.
His music is still played today like the hit song "Bidi Bidi Bam Bam" which was released in 1994. And his memories are alive through his fans.
Musician and Selena fan Daisy Zambrano told Houston TV station ABC 13 Thursday, "She was basically magic on stage, but other than that she really tried to bond with people, not just on a show."
And now fans may soon get to hear some new Selena music. Her father, Abraham Quintanilla, recently told Latin Groove News that a new Selena album is expected to be released in April. According to NPR, the new album will feature 13 songs, including one Selena recorded when she was 13, and was worked on by Quintanilla's brother.
Yolanda Saldivar, the woman who shot and killed Selena, is serving a sentence in a Texas maximum security prison. He is expected to be eligible for parole in 2025.
