Backed by the Hanseroth twins and Shooter Jennings, the songwriter is a light in the dark

Brandi Carlile kept her recent performance of the memorable Grammy Awards alive on Sunday, delivering a stunning rendition of her song "Right On Time" during the ceremony.

Carlyle began singing from his latest album In the Silent Days, sitting alone at the piano. After playing the intro, she picked up a Les Paul and joined her longtime musical partners with the Henseroth twins on an elevated stage, where stage lights projected all the colors of the prism behind them. Carlyle's sequin jacket also acted like her prism, with lights bouncing around the room while her producer, Shooter Jennings, played the piano.

The Washington state songstress entered the evening with "Right on Time" among several nominees for Record of the Year and Song of the Year. Additionally, Carlyle has a nomination for her participation in the Alicia Keys collaboration "A Beautiful Noise", co-written by Carlyle and Keys with Ruby Amanfu, Brandi Clark, Hilary Lindsay, Lori McKenna, Linda Perry and Hailey Whitters. went. The Grammys also caused some controversy when Carlyle revealed that her songs and album were being considered only in the pop and all-genre categories and not in the US region where she has been a previous winner.

"The importance of living and working within America is more than just me," Carlyle said at the time. “There is never a moment when I don't see my role as something bigger. I feel a great responsibility in representing marginalized queer people in rural America who grew up on country and native music, but are repeatedly and systematically rejected by the correlated culture. ,

In the Grammys press room, Bonnie Raitt spoke at length about her admiration for Carlyle. "I'm so happy to be one of her mentors. She's done so much for so many other women in the business," Ritt said. “What he has done for Joni and helping her after her aneurysm has been amazing. I admire her so much and I am glad to have someone in her vein of influence.”

This spring and summer, Carlyle will lead the Beyond In Silent Days tour, which includes stops including Los Angeles' Greek Theater, Nashville's Ascend Amphitheater, and Colorado's Red Rocks Amphitheater. The supporting cast varies throughout the trek but includes Lucius, the Indigo Girls, Celis and Ani DiFranco.
