Women's WC: Dottin's last over heroic help WI defeat NZ in opening game

Matthews played a knock of 119, whereas Dottin scalped two wickets in the last over and took to their team to victory against New Zealand by 3 runs.

West Indies batsman Hayley Matthews Ton, who was backed by vital bowling from Deandra Dottin, helped New Zealand beat New Zealand in the opening game of the Women's ODI World Cup, 2022, at the Bay Oval, Mount Maunganui, here on Friday.

Mathews scored 119 runs while Dottin took two wickets in the last over to guide his team to a 3-run win against New Zealand.

Chasing 260, New Zealand suffered an early defeat as opener Suzie Bates was run out for 3, taking the team's total to 14/1. Captain Sophie Devine was then joined by Amelia Kerr, but was also dismissed by Mathews after a brief stint.

It was then Amy Satterthwaite who shook hands with Devine and the two forged a great partnership to take the Whiteferns past the 100-run mark. But their joy was short-lived as Satterthwaite (31) was sent back in the dugout by Anissa Mohamed with a total of 123/3.

Anissa dismissed Lee Tahuhu (6), followed by the wickets of Maddie Greene and Brooke Holiday by Shakira Selman and Mathews, respectively.

Later, Katie Martin and Devine played some crucial innings where the latter scored his century and was then caught and bowled by Chinelle Henry in the 45th over with the team scoring 215/7.

Martin tried to take the innings forward for some time but all efforts were in vain as Vir dismissed the remaining three batsmen in Dotin's last over and defended six runs. In this way his team won by 3 runs.

Earlier, Mathews scored 119 runs and Tahuhu took three wickets for New Zealand, while Jess Kerr took two.

West Indies will face England on Wednesday, while New Zealand will face Bangladesh on Monday, for their next Women's World Cup, 2022 clash.

Brief scores: West Indies 259/9 (Haley Matthews 119, Chedian Nation 36; Lee Tahuhu 3-57) vs New Zealand 256/10 (Sophie Devine 108, Katie Martin 44; Deandra Dottin 2-2)
