Alonso said he had to kick out his windshield to get to safety after his car flipped over three time
New York Mets first baseman Pete Alonso was in a "brutal" car accident on Sunday. On Monday at the Mets Spring Training in Port St. Lucie, Fla., Slugger told reporters he "feels really blessed to be here" and gave details about how the accident happened.
According to Alonso, he was driving through an intersection in Tampa when another driver ran a red light and hit him, causing his car to overturn three times. The Mets star's wife, Haley, was following him in a different car and immediately called emergency services and came to Pete's aid.
"One [moment] I was coming here to work, coming to spring training, and the next thing I know I'm kicking my windshield trying to get out of the flip-over car," They said.
Alonso, 27, says he is "fine" and others involved in the crash are also safe.

Alonso said that, in light of the accident, this spring training is now extra special for him.
He was able to field the ground ball and participate in practice as he usually did on Mondays. The slugger won the home run derby for the second time in his career and led the Mets in hits (147), home runs (37), RBIs (94) and batting average (.262) in the 2021 season.
