Mets' Pete Alonso 'thankful to be alive' after car accident, kicked in windshield to escape

Alonso batted .262 with 37 homers and 94 RBIs last season

New York Mets superstar Pete Alonso was involved in a "brutal" car accident on Sunday.

The first baseman on his way to the team's spring training in Tampa said his car flipped three times. With the help of his wife Haley, who was in another car, Alonso managed to escape without major injuries. Alonso said the crash was so terrible that he had to kick his windshield to get out of his vehicle.

"Yesterday was a real close to death experience," Alonso explained to reporters. "My car probably overturned about three times. The guy ran a red light, T-boned me, and to me, I'm really grateful to be alive. I'm really grateful that I'm healthy. So grateful to be there." I'm here. Anything can happen at any moment."

Alonso said all is well in his family, and he will be ready to go for full spring training activities on Tuesday.

"You never know what could happen," Alonso continued. "Anything can happen at any time, anything can go off the rails at any time. One thing I did was coming here for Spring Training, coming here to work, and next thing I know, I'm kicking my windshield, trying to get out of a flip-over car. I'm really blessed to be here."

Last season, Alonso batted .262 with 37 homers and 94 RBI. He will once again be a key part of New York's success in 2022.
