Port ST. Lucy, Fla. Pete Alonso is recovering after suffering a near-death experience on Sunday when a driver ran a red light and hit him, causing his car to overturn three times, he said on Monday.
The accident occurred in Alonso's hometown of Tampa, at the start of his drive for Mets spring training across the state. He was the only person in the car – his wife, Haley, with their dogs following behind him in another car – and was not seriously injured.
"I am grateful to be alive," said Alonso, who was shaken by the accident a day later. "I'm really grateful that I'm healthy, so grateful to be here. Anything can happen at any moment. I'm really, really blessed to be here."
"One [moment] I was coming here to work, coming to spring training, and the next thing I know I'm kicking my windshield trying to get out of the flip-over car. Here Really blessed to have come. Grateful nothing's wrong. Also thanks to Ford that it has great engineering."
Alonso did some light baseball work on Monday and said he would fully participate in the Mets workout on Tuesday.
